Hike to Grassy Top Mountain

I like to geek out while having real experiences. I maintain an extensive GPS database from my hikes, bikes, runs, and skis dating back to 2008. Feel free to follow the georss feed, explore the map above or download the GPS tracks below.

I had some errands to run in Metalline and I took the opportunity to go for a nice hike in Colville National Forest. The weather was great (though brisk), the trails were amazingly well built and maintained and the views were fantastic. The initial climb through the forest was totally manageable with the well designed contours and flowy switchbacks. Once I passed through the first saddle to gain the alpine there were huckleberry bushes galore. The hiking was easy and scenic, and it didn't take too long to gain Grassy Top Mountain. The view from the actual summit left a bit to be desired so I went up another ridge line on the return (per guidebook instructions). Great view into Idaho and Salmo-Priest, though I didn't necessarily know what I was looking at. The hike back was easy and mellow. As this was a holiday weekend, at the pass, I ran into a number of groups of high-end ATV'ers. They were pleasant enough, but it was weird to not see anyone for hours and then all of a sudden have 10 suped up ATVs passing by.
